The Ohio Greenway Covered Bridge

The Ohio Greenway Covered Bridge, in the village of Hebron located in Licking County is one of Ohio's newer covered bridges, completed in 1992 by bridge builder Paul Compton.

John Smollen, Astabula County Engineer, designed this bridge at no additional costs to Licking County. Approximately $10,000.00 in materials were used to build the bridge itself. Owens-Corning Fiberglass of Newark donated the roof shingles and the labor was donated by the Ohio Civilian Conservation Corps.

The bridge is 79 feet 6 inches long and has a Town-lattice truss. This
covered bridge crosses over a branch of the Licking Creek which provides
fishing access to the adjacent canal lands as well as clean-up and
enhancement of the wetlands at the southern terminus of the Greenway. It will bear a dead load of 500 pounds per linear foot, a snow load of 180 pounds per linear foot, a live load of 75 pounds per square foot; the chord stress is 1200 pounds per square inch.

The bridge was designed for walkers and bicyclists along the Ohio Canal
Greenway. It sits on the former Penn Central right-of-way near Hebron, Ohio, a 3 mile recreational path. The bridge is maintained by staff
of the Licking Park District and is the first wooden truss bridge built in
Ohio since 1986. The bridge is made of kiln-dried southern yellow pine,
supported by wood, not steel. This design is modeled after an 1820'e era covered bridge

Directions: Turn left at SR 79E exit, go North over I-70 to village of
Hebron, 8 tenths of a mile, turn left on High Street and go to Cumberland,
left two miles, bridge is on the right. The Hebron fish hatchery is on the
left across from the bridge. Anyone wishing to visit the bridge should park
in the Hebron Fish Hatchery parking lot across the road from the bridge
