  Mark Berger

"Having personally photographed, hunted, recorded and researched all known 150 existing, (or recently defunct) covered bridges in Ohio, that I have found in almost each county, I now own The Definitive Collection of Covered Bridges in Ohio. I plan to publish a book soon. To see more photography about covered bridges and other topics, visit my website"

The Homestead Covered Bridge

The Homestead Covered Bridge was designed by architect Robert Wandel and built by Dave Holley Construction. Wandel & Schnell Architects received the 1992 Honor Award by the American Institute of Architects. Completed in July of 1992 at a cost of $57,300.00, the bridge is 47 feet 3 inches long, with a Howe truss roof design and a Warren truss for the floor and sides.

Homestead Park was designed by Myers Schmalenberger Inc., Landscape Architects/Land Planner, the Washington Township Community Development Committee & Jannell Thomas. Tim Schmalenberger was the primary Architect. Washington Township was the recipient of the Ohio Parks & Recreation 1992 Park Area Development Award.

This family oriented park was designed to preserve the rural heritage of the community. It replicates an old covered bridge in style, but modified to be wider, allowing an open view of the park to all travelers who come over the bridge by car, bike, or on foot.

The Homestead is a public park owned and operated by Washington Township. The park offers family recreation at its best. Since the park opened in 1992, a toddler water play area, an amphitheater, a refreshment/restroom facility with a waiting platform, and a replica of a railroad depot have all been added:The park is open to the public daily form 9:00 a.m. until sunset.

Directions: The Homestead Park in located at 4675 Cosgray Road in Hilliard, Ohio. For additional information, call the park office at (614) 876-1644.
